Van Essen September Update

Dear praying friends,

We are finally sitting down to write a long overdue update.  Life has seemed like a whirlwind the past month and a half. School started Aug 14th. The first couple weeks were exhausting.  It took a few weeks to get school class schedules hashed out but we finally have a rhythm going that seems to work well for the students and ourselves. Matt is teaching a 3rd and 4th grade combination.  He started out with 13 students, and as of this week there are 14.  In general the class seems to get along well and be respectful.  Matt enjoys teaching Bible memory and Bible each day.  There have been several opportunities to talk of the Lord to the children as we teach and different topics come up. Please pray for fruit in the lives of each of the students.

I, Sarah, have been helping Matt with teaching the 4th grade math as well as helping with small reading groups.  I also am the facilitator for the high school kids homeschool education.  We are so thankful that Anne Denny has taken on teaching math to the high school students. That is a huge answer to prayer. There are four high school students, three of ours and one from another mission family.  We are slowly getting into a rhythm with a few adjustments to the busy schedules the teens have.

Our older children are joining in with some of the classes at the school.  Some are taking Navajo lessons, guitar lessons, piano lessons, or PE.  The 6-8th graders have short-term “clubs” (like shop or weight lifting) so Nehemiah was able to participate in those. On Thursdays the older three kids help by cleaning the school bus and the two vans.  It has been a big learning curve for them as they try to do all the checks required for the inspections. On Fridays, there is a sewing class outreach that our girls have gone to one time.  I think they plan on attending when able. Nehemiah has enjoyed learning and playing basketball as well as pickleball.  I, Sarah, was even talked into playing once.  The older kids were able to go to a biking event called Trails to Rails run by a non-profit in the community. They helped fix bikes and enjoyed spending time with Roger Jr. and Tiffany Hosteen and others from the Mission.

Over all our kids seem to be adjusting well to being in school and living here at the mission.  Much time is spent playing outside with the other kids on campus, chasing lizards and looking for beetles. There have been a few hard times and we have been learning as a family to take those to the Lord and wait to see how He works out the details that to us seem overwhelming.

Late in August we went to Durango, CO to buy clothes for Caleb and Bethany’s wedding.  It is a beautiful area and we were delighted to find a spot in the national forest where we could park for free and access the La Plata river.  It is very shallow there with lots of beautiful, colorful rocks.  It was a much needed restful and refreshing time for all of us.

The big event for the month of August was our son Caleb’s wedding to Bethany White. It was a whirlwind trip for us over Labor Day weekend back to Nebraska. We are very thankful for the Viola family from the chapel in Lincoln for hosting us and spoiling us over the weekend.  We definitely did not go away hungry. It was so good to see everyone even for just a short time.  The wedding was beautiful and focused on the Lord being the center of marriage. We are delighted for Caleb and Bethany.  Please do pray for them as they start out their lives together.

Every Thursday the whole school has chapel.  This year they are using the King of Glory Curriculum.  Please pray for the hearts of the children to be soft to the gospel.

Matthew speaks at Immanuel Navajo Chapel here next Sunday.  (The messages are in English.)  He would really appreciate prayer for that time.

One of the big challenges is finding quality family time. That is something we are working on establishing.  After homeschool for so many years it has been a very big adjustment for me especially to have the kids off in different places all day.  It is wonderful the kids have friends here on campus.  But that does mean we have to set up some non negotiable times when we can just be a family and keep connected.  We would appreciate prayer for wisdom in how to do that well.

Thank you again for praying for us and for the work at Immanuel Mission.

In Christ,

Matt, Sarah, and Family
